Understanding Asbestos Surveys and Key Controls

Risk management experts Greencap have released their latest Risk Review that focuses on the ongoing problem of workplace asbestos. The Risk Review explores the distinction between the two common types of asbestos surveys, and details two key control measures for eliminating the risk of potential exposure.

Greencap say that despite being banned in Australia since 2003, asbestos is still an important issue in today’s workplaces, and that the continued raising of awareness is required to adequately mitigate the risk associated with the deadly substance.

They say the asbestos problem is exemplified by recent issues involving imported products from overseas containing asbestos, and a general lack of understanding of asbestos registers and the requirements for intrusive or destructive testing prior to refurbishment.

"Whilst many organisations have committed to ‘asbestos free’ workplaces, the lack of understanding of risk factors and the sheer cost and practicability of removal have been significant challenges for business and Government."

The Risk Review details the differences between the various types of asbestos surveys, what their applications are, and when additional testing and investigations may be required. It also explains how businesses can implement key control measures including asbestos management plans and asbestos awareness training.
